Born on 26 May 1867, the daughter of Francis, Duke of Teck, and Princess Mary Adelaide, Princess Victoria Mary married George, the second son of King Edward VII, on 6 July 1893.
The Princess then became H.R.H. The Duchess of Cornwall and York and later, in November 1901, the Princess of Wales (see so552).
Princess Mary became Queen on the death of King Edward VII in May 1910 (see so384).

This portrait silk depicts Queen Mary as H.R.H. THE DUCHESS OF CORNWALL AND YORK, the official title, which was woven across the bottom of the silk.
The design was registered on 8 May 1901, and the registration number 373873 is woven on most examples.

The short title DUCHESS OF YORK was first listed on label 31+39.

The same picture was also issued with the amended title H.R.H. THE PRINCESS OF WALES in 1901 (see so552).
