Sailing of the Mayflower, 1620. The travels of the Pilgrim Fathers began in 1610 when members of the English Separatist Church migrated to Leyden, Holland, seeking to practise their religious beliefs free from persecution. Despite being well received in Holland they became fearful 'that their posterity would in a few generations become Dutch and so lose their interest in the English nation; they being desirous rather to enlarge his Majesty's Dominions and to live under their natural prince' and they returned to England. On September 6th, 1620, 35 members of the Separatist Church were included in a party of 102 men, women and children who sailed from the Old Barbican, Plymouth, England on board the Mayflower. A small party from the ship landed at what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts on December 21st 1620, establishing the first permanent colony in New England.

In 1969 another picture, THE SAILING OF THE MAYFLOWER, 1620, again having no apparant connection with Macclesfield, was marketed in a further attempt to break into the American market. Anticipating a successful outcome, a greater number of pictures than normal were produced, but this venture was also a failure. The increased production almost certainly led to this particular picture becoming the least expensive one (still) to obtain. Other comments:
